Do you need to tape your Holga? It depends, but usually the simple answer is yes, you definetly have to.
Light leaks may be some of the characteristics you are looking for in lomography, and Holga will usually give you plenty of light leaks, even using some tape to seal the camera.
The back of the camera is not attached in a good way, it´s very simple and light leaks are very common. We usually tape all the sides of the back – both sides, over and under. We even tape the small counter window.
Which tape to use?
We are using any dark coloured electrical tape. Black is most common, but we have tried blue and red as well. We now others are using blue painter´s tape for the sides as Holgaphotography.com. It is up to you.
Tape counter window?
We definetly reccommend this. Black electrical tape is super for this. If you are using 220-film it is even more important to cover this windows as this film has no backing paper and is exposed right away!
Conclusion: Tape in order to minimize light leaks, not getting rid of them if you like the look of some light leaks. We find it very cool with a bit of light leaks, but too much would destroy the whole photograph. Actually, light leaks is one of the things we love about Holga photography!
